The 6 Days Kibale Chimpanzee Tracking & Rwenzori Hiking Adventure offers a unique combination of primate encounters and mountain exploration in Uganda. Your journey begins in Kibale Forest National Park, one of the best places in Africa to see chimpanzees in the wild. A guided chimpanzee tracking experience takes you deep into the tropical rainforest, where you’ll also encounter other primates, colorful birds, and diverse flora. The visit to Bigodi Wetlands adds to the experience with its rich biodiversity and community-based tourism charm.

After Kibale, the tour leads to the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, often called the “Mountains of the Moon.” Over several days, you’ll hike through varied landscapes including bamboo forests, rocky ridges, and alpine meadows. The trails are scenic and peaceful, offering incredible views and a true sense of adventure. This tour is ideal for travelers who enjoy wildlife, nature, and physical activity—all in one unforgettable Ugandan experience.

Day 1. Transfer from Kampala to Kibale National Park

The guide will pick you from your hotel in Entebbe/airport and then transfer to Kibale. The journey is about 7 hours with a stopover in Mubende for lunch. You will check in at a Kibale forest lodge where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 2. Chimp Tracking - Transfer to Nyakalengija

After breakfast at the lodge, you will go to Kibale headquarters where you will present your permits and be briefly briefed about the activity and then set out into the forest. The activity will take about 4 hours or more depending on the location of the chimps. As you track them, you will be able to spot other primates that live in the park like baboons, monkeys, various indigenous tree species, and birds. You will then return to the lodge, refresh, and have lunch. After lunch, you will check out of the lodge and transfer to Kasese – Nyakalengija. Check in at Equator Snow Lodge where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 3. Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba

After breakfast at the lodge, you will walk to the starting point of the hike where you will find your guide and porters. You will start your hike from Nyakalengija through bamboo, high elephant grass, dense bushes, climbing rocks, and crossing river Mahoma. Along this route, you will be able to spot white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, three-horned chameleon, and various bird species like the Rwenzori Turaco. The journey will take about 4-5 hours and then finally reach Nyabitaba hut, where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 4. Nyabitaba – John Matte

You will have breakfast and then proceed with the hike through the forest to the Kurt Shafer bridge, which is the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers. Then proceed through the bamboo forest and slippery moss-covered rocks for a couple of hours. The top of Nyamulegeya rock will give you a view of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. You will then reach John Matte hut. At this hut, you will have a clear view of Mt. Stanley and the Margherita glacier if the weather is clear. You will have dinner and spend the night at this hut.

Day 5. John Matte – Nyakalengija

After breakfast, you will hike a little more to see the giant lobelias before descending back to Nyakalengija. You will then return to Equator Snow Lodge where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Distance Covered: 15kms (10-12 hours ascent - 4-6 hours descent)
Accommodation: Mweka Hut

Day 6. Drive to Kampala

You will have breakfast at the lodge and then check out. Your driver will then drive you back to Kampala. You will stop over in Mubende for lunch and then proceed. The driver will drop you at your hotel in Kampala/Entebbe or the airport for your flight back home.
