7 Days Rwenzori Trekking Expeditions - Kilembe Trail Hike - Itinerary

Day 1: Ranger Post to Kalalama Camp

Begin your mesmerizing trek from the ranger post, heading to the Rwenzori National Park entrance, marking the official start of the hike. Traverse the mountain forest zone, where you may encounter Colobus Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, and birds like the Ruwenzori Turaco. Stop at Sine Camp for lunch and refreshments before continuing to Kalalama Camp at 3,147m. Check into cabins, enjoy dinner, receive a briefing for the next day, and spend the night.

Day 2: Kalalama Camp to Mutinda Camp

Wake by 7 AM, enjoy breakfast, and set off at 9 AM from Kalalama Camp (3,147m) to Mutinda Camp (3,688m). Pass through the steep bamboo-mimulopsis zone with high steps, stopping for tea and refreshments. Continue along the heather zone, passing streams, waterfalls, and Giant Heather trees, often in a misty atmosphere. Arrive at Mutinda Camp, named after Mutinda Peaks. Optionally, climb to Mutinda Lookout (3,925m) for views of the Rwenzori Mountains, Kasese town, and Lake George (1.5 hours up, 1 hour down). Check into cabins, have dinner, receive a briefing, and overnight.

Day 3: Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp

Start at 9 AM from Mutinda Camp, hiking through boggy terrain with wet vegetation and tussocks. Enter the Alpine vegetation zone, featuring Giant Lobelias, Groundsel, and Everlasting Flowers, crossing the Mutinda Valley. Climb a steep section to Namusangi Valley (3,840m) for views of Mutinda Peaks. Cross bogs to reach Bugata Camp at 4,062m, offering views of Weismann’s Peak and Mount Luigi of Savoy, often snow-covered. Pass Lake Kitandara, stretching toward the Democratic Republic of Congo. From Plozza Rock, enjoy views of nine lakes and Lake Nusuranja. Bugata Camp offers solar lights, eco-toilets, and bathrooms. Have dinner, receive a briefing, and overnight.

Day 4: Bugata Camp to Hunwick’s Camp

After breakfast at Bugata Camp, hike to Bamwanjara Pass (4,450m), climbing steadily through flat bogs with views of glacial lakes below. At the pass, rest in a shelter and enjoy views of snow-capped peaks. Descend to Lower and Upper Kachope Lakes, navigating steep, muddy trails with views of Kachope Lakes and McConnell’s Prong. Arrive at Hunwick’s Camp (3,974m), set on a ridge overlooking Mount Baker. Have dinner, receive a briefing, and overnight.

Day 5: Hunwick’s Camp to Margherita Camp

After breakfast, trek from Hunwick’s Camp to Margherita Camp (4,485m), a critical step before the summit. Walk along a ridge, crossing wet areas and rivers from Mount Baker and Freshfields Pass. Climb Scott Elliott Pass to Margherita Camp, sheltered by high rocks, once used by Italian Prince Luigi Amadeo di Savoia. Enjoy views of Mount Baker, Scott Elliott Pass, and Mount Stanley’s glaciers. The day’s hike covers 4.2km. Prepare for the summit day, practicing with ropes, hiking shoes, ice axes, and crampons. Have dinner, receive a briefing, and overnight.

Day 6: Summit Margherita Peak and Return to Hunwick’s Camp

Wake at 3 AM for breakfast and begin the summit trek at 4 AM to Margherita Peak (5,109m) on Mount Stanley, the longest and most challenging day. Climb the steep Margherita Glacier before sunrise to avoid melting ice. Near the summit, navigate a roped, bolted rock section to reach the peak. Enjoy panoramic views of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and eat a special food package. Descend back to Hunwick’s Camp (3,974m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Descend to Ranger Post

Wake to the calls of the Ruwenzori Turaco and other birds. After breakfast, descend through a valley rich with birdlife, Chameleons, and Giant Lobelias. Spot Duikers feeding among flowering plants. Climb 200m to a ridge overlooking the valley, then cross small valleys and streams to Kyalavula. Return to the Base Camp, where you’ll receive a Rwenzori hiking certificate, marking the end of this mesmerizing trek.
