Day 1: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut

Begin your trek after breakfast at the camp with a briefing at the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS) headquarters in Nyakalengija. Trek through Bakonzo settlements to the Mount Rwenzori National Park gate for registration, then embark on the Central Circuit Trail through dense tropical forest, characterized by high elephant grass and thick bushes. This biodiverse region is home to Forest Elephants, Chimpanzees, Hyraxes, Black-and-white Colobus Monkeys, L’Hoest’s Monkeys, Duikers, and Three-horned Chameleons. Birdlife includes Handsome Francolin, Ruwenzori Turaco, Long-eared Owl, Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, Strange Weaver, Archer’s Robin-chat, and Ruwenzori Batis. The 8km trek concludes at Nyabitaba Hut, where you’ll enjoy dinner and spend the night.

Day 2: Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut

After breakfast at Nyabitaba Hut, trek through thick shrubs and forest for 30 minutes to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, located at the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. Continue through bamboo and montane forests, navigating slippery moss-covered rocks for several hours, with opportunities to spot diverse bird species. Pause for lunch at Nyamuleju Rock Shelter, a historic campsite offering views of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke in clear weather. Proceed through alpine forest to John Matte Hut, near the Bujuku River, where the cold water provides a refreshingly invigorating bath. Enjoy views of the Margherita Glacier between Alexandra and Margherita peaks on Mount Stanley. The trek covers 11km. Have dinner and overnight at John Matte Hut.

Day 3: John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut

After breakfast, cross the Bujuku River and trek through forest to the Lower Bigo Bog, a swampy valley home to Giant Lobelias. Previously the most challenging section due to its boggy terrain, a boardwalk now facilitates the traverse to the end of the bog. Observe Giant Lobelias, Everlasting Flowers, and Groundsels as you ascend a steep ridge to the Upper Bigo Bog, followed by another boardwalk to Lake Bujuku. Navigate a small boggy area without boardwalks to reach Bujuku Hut, offering views of Lake Bujuku, Mount Speke, Mount Baker, and Mount Stanley. From here, ascents to Mount Speke or Mount Stanley are possible. The trek covers 6km. Have dinner and overnight at Bujuku Hut.

Day 4: Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut

After breakfast at Bujuku Hut, embark on a 5-7 hour trek to Elena Hut. Navigate the sides of the Upper Bigo Bog and ascend the steep western slopes of Lake Bujuku to the Scott Elliot Pass at 4,372m, passing through swamps and the scenic Ground Gully. Use a metal ladder to climb a steep section at the gully’s top. The trail splits: the left descends to Kitandara Lakes, while the right leads to Elena Hut via a steep path over large boulders toward Mount Stanley. Located in the cold, rocky part of Mount Stanley, Elena Hut offers direct views of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, weather permitting. Have dinner and overnight at Elena Hut.

Day 5: Elena Hut to Kitandara Hut

Wake at 2 AM for breakfast at Elena Hut, preparing with warm gear, harness, gloves, headlamp, helmet, and sunglasses. Trek to Margherita Peak (5,109m) on Mount Stanley via the Stanley Plateau, using ropes on steep rocky areas and crampons and ice axes on glacial sections. After several hours, reach the base of the Margherita Glacier, the most challenging part of the trek. Ascend to the peak for views of Irene Lake, Mount Speke, and the surrounding landscape. Descend to Elena Hut for lunch, then continue to Kitandara Hut via Scott Elliot Pass, a scenic highlight of the Rwenzori. For those not summiting, trek directly from Bujuku Hut to Kitandara Hut via Scott Elliot Pass (4-5 hours). The summit route covers 6km. Have dinner and overnight at Kitandara Hut.

Descend through muddy trails, passing the Bujangolo Rock Shelter, the 1906 Duke of Abruzzi expedition base. The 6km trek to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,505m), located by the Mubuku River, takes 5-7 hours. Have dinner and overnight at Guy Yeoman Hut.
