Conquering Kilimanjaro: A 3-Day Marangu Route Expedition

This 3 Day Kilimanjaro expedition begins in the towns of Arusha or Moshi, located at the base of the mountain, and follows an abbreviated route, such as the Marangu route. The journey involves hiking through various climatic zones, including rainforest, heath, moorland, and alpine desert, towards to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters/19,341 feet) or Kibo Peak (5,896 meters/19,341 feet), which is the highest point in Africa. This ambitious undertaking requires a high level of physical fitness and acclimatization to altitude. It’s important to note that this itinerary is not recommended by most tour operators due to safety concerns related to altitude sickness and insufficient acclimatization time.

3 days Mount Kilimanjaro climbing through most preferred route in Kilimanjaro Mountain climbing-Marangu route. Marangu Route is the most popular, least difficult and the shortest way to Uhuru Peak. Many prefer to hike Marangu route because it is considered to be a plain path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and almost direct path. However, the short time frame of the route makes altitude acclimatization fairly a challenge.



Conquering Kilimanjaro: A 3-Day Marangu Expedition itinerary


Day 1 : Kilimanjaro Marangu to Horombo Hut

  • Rising: 9,000 ft / 2,700 m to 12,100 ft / 3,700 m
  • Stretch: 11 km
  • Climatic habitat: Heathland/ Moorland
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Shelter: Horombo Hut
  • After having breakfast and consultation, a driver from Africa Natural Tours will drive you to Marangu gate, hiker(s) will be required to register and begin the climb. Hiker(s) will walk through the rainforest to the Mandara camping area. A side trip to Maundi Crater is an excellent means to see the surroundings including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Hiker(s) will leave the openings of the rainforest and follow an ascending path on the open hills to the Horombo camping area. Visibility of the summit of Kibo and Mawenzi are awesome. Hiker(s) may arise to feel the effects of the gaining of altitude.



    Day 2: Kilimanjaro Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut to Summit then Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 15,400 ft / 4,700 m to 19,300 ft / 5,895 m 19,300 ft / 5,895 m to 12,100 ft / 3,700 m
  • Stretch: 14 km up / 14 km down
  • Climatic habitat: Alpine Desert
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • Shelter: Horombo Camp
  • Climbing up on Marangu route, we now pass the last watering point, walking into the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Hiker(s) eat, relaxation, and prepare for summit climb. Very early in the morning (from midnight to 2:00 am) hiker(s) commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s point located on the crater flange. Continuing hiking and ascend to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa. There are awesome and unbelievable views at every turn. Hikers have your picture taken at the summit to show your friends and family. From here hiker(s) descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo camping ground. The starting of this climb to the summit is done in the dark and involves headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers and jackets



    Day 2: Kilimanjaro Horombo huts – Kilimanjaro Marangu gate – Moshi

  • Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 1700m/5500ft
  • Stretch: 20km/12.5m
  • Climatic Habitat: Forest
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • A long trek is in store for today, however it is mostly downhill. Once at the park headquarters at Marangu Gate hiker(s) pick up our certificate that shows our success and the driver from Africa natural tour will pick you up to the hotel. Hence becomes the end of 3 days Kilimanjaro climbing up to summit from Arusha/Moshi.
