7 Days Shira Route Kilimanjaro Climbing Package

Our guides' top pick for the Shira Route: the same fast drive onto the high plateau, the same quiet Southern Circuit trail — plus one extra night at Karanga Camp that meaningfully improves your odds of standing on Uhuru Peak.

7 DaysOn the mountain
~3,610mDay 1 camp altitude
5,895mUhuru Peak summit
85–90%Summit success rate

One extra night, a much better summit chance

The 7-day itinerary follows the exact same trail as our 6-day package, with a single deliberate change that makes a real difference.

Instead of pushing straight from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp in one long day, this itinerary breaks that stretch in two — adding an overnight at Karanga Camp (4,035m). That extra sleep cycle at altitude is the single most effective way to improve acclimatization on any Kilimanjaro route, which is why this is the version our own guides recommend to most clients booking the Shira Route. You still get everything that makes Shira distinctive: the high-altitude drive-in onto the plateau, the dramatic Shira Cathedral views, and a quieter trail than Lemosho or Machame — just with a meaningfully safer pace toward the summit.

6-Day Itinerary

Barranco → Barafu in one long day. Faster, but a tighter acclimatization curve.

7-Day Itinerary (this page)

Barranco → Karanga → Barafu. One extra night at altitude before summit night.

7-Day Shira Route — day by day

Camp names, altitudes, and what to expect on each day of the climb.

Day 1

Londorossi Gate → Simba Camp (≈3,610m)

Drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate for park registration, then continue by 4x4 up a rough track toward the western edge of the Shira Plateau. A short walk from the drop-off point brings you to Simba Camp for the night.

Day 2

Simba Camp → Shira 2 Camp (≈3,850m)

An easy, scenic crossing of the open plateau, passing the jagged Shira Cathedral rock formation, with wide views toward Kibo's summit ice before settling at Shira 2 Camp.

Day 3

Shira 2 Camp → Barranco Camp via Lava Tower (≈3,960m)

A classic "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization day: ascend to Lava Tower at 4,600m, then descend through the otherworldly Senecio forest into Barranco Camp, beneath the looming Barranco Wall.

Day 4

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (≈4,035m) Extra night vs. 6-day

The hands-on (non-technical) scramble up the Barranco Wall opens the day, followed by a shorter, gentler walk across rolling terrain to Karanga Camp — this is the additional acclimatization stop that sets the 7-day itinerary apart.

Day 5

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (≈4,640m)

A short, manageable day crossing the Karanga Valley to reach Barafu Camp, the base for the summit attempt, with views across the Southern Icefields. Rest and prepare gear for the night ahead.

Day 6

Summit night: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (≈3,100m)

A midnight departure, climbing steadily via Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak around sunrise, followed by a long descent past Barafu Camp down to rest at Mweka Camp.

Day 7

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate

A final morning descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where summit certificates are presented before your transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

7 Days Shira Route — frequently asked questions

Why is 7 days better than 6 days on the Shira Route?

The 7-day version adds an overnight at Karanga Camp instead of pushing straight through to Barafu in one long day. That extra night at altitude gives your body more time to adjust before the summit attempt, which is the single biggest factor in summit success on any Kilimanjaro route.

What is the summit success rate on the 7-day Shira Route?

Generally in the 85–90% range, comparable to the 7 and 8-day Lemosho itineraries, since both routes share the same Southern Circuit approach to Barafu Camp and Uhuru Peak after joining at Shira 2 Camp.

Is the 7-day Shira Route suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers?

It's more forgiving than the 6-day version, but the route still starts high (around 3,610m on day one) by driving rather than walking up gradually. First-timers should still prepare carefully and consider a lower-starting route, such as Lemosho, if they want the gentlest possible acclimatization curve.

What's included in the 7 days Shira Route package?

Park fees, camping fees, a licensed guide and support crew, porters, a cook, all meals on the mountain, camping equipment, and transport between Moshi or Arusha and the gates. Flights, tips, and personal gear are not included.
