Climb Kilimanjaro via the Shira Route — 2026, 2027, 2028

Kilimanjaro's quietest western approach starts where most other routes are just getting going: high on the historic Shira Plateau. Trade the long rainforest walk-in for sweeping volcanic views, fewer trekkers on the trail, and a fast, scenic line toward the Southern Circuit and Uhuru Peak.

The route that skips the long walk-in

Most Kilimanjaro routes start with a full day of hiking through dense rainforest before reaching the moorland zone. Shira does it differently.

Climbers are driven from Londorossi Gate up a rough track to Morum Barrier or Simba Camp, on the edge of the wide, ancient Shira Plateau — the collapsed caldera of one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones. From there, the trek joins the same Southern Circuit used by Lemosho climbers, passing Shira 2 Camp, Lava Tower, Barranco Camp, Karanga, and Barafu before the final push to Uhuru Peak. The terrain is open, the crowds are thin, and the views across the plateau toward Kibo's summit ice are some of the best on the mountain — but the trade-off is a much higher starting altitude than almost any other route.

Why climbers choose the Shira Route

Three reasons trekkers pick Shira over the busier western routes.

A faster start

Driving to roughly 3,500–3,600 meters instead of hiking up from the gate trims a full trekking day off your itinerary without cutting into the scenic Southern Circuit section everyone wants to experience.

A quieter trail

Far fewer climbers start from Shira than from Lemosho or Machame, so the first two days on the plateau are noticeably calmer — smaller camps, more space, and a real sense of remoteness.

Open, dramatic scenery

Instead of forest canopy, your first views are wide volcanic plains, the jagged Shira Cathedral rock formation, and uninterrupted sightlines to Kibo — a different visual experience from day one.

7-Day Shira Route — day by day

Our most-booked Shira itinerary, built with one extra acclimatization day compared to the 6-day version.

Day 1 — Londorossi Gate to Simba Camp (≈3,600m)

Drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration, then continue by vehicle up a rugged track to the Shira Plateau's edge. A short afternoon walk eases you into camp at altitude.

Day 2 — Simba Camp to Shira 2 Camp (≈3,850m)

An easy, scenic walk across the plateau itself, passing the dramatic Shira Cathedral rock formation. Gentle elevation gain helps your body begin adjusting.

Day 3 — Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower (≈3,960m)

The "climb high, sleep low" day: ascend to Lava Tower at 4,600m for acclimatization, then descend through the otherworldly Senecio forest into Barranco Camp.

Day 4 — Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (≈4,035m)

A short but engaging day that includes the hands-on (non-technical) scramble up the Barranco Wall, followed by a gentler walk to Karanga.

Day 5 — Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (≈4,640m)

The final approach to base camp, with views across the Southern Icefields. Rest, hydrate, and prepare gear ahead of the midnight summit attempt.

Day 6 — Summit night: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp

A midnight start, climbing via Stella Point to Uhuru Peak for sunrise, then a long descent past Barafu to rest at Mweka Camp.

Day 7 — Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

A final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where certificates are issued before transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

Two itinerary lengths, both fully supported with guides, porters, cook, park fees, camping gear, and meals.

6 day Shira Route Kilimanjaro package crossing the Shira Plateau
6 DAYS · BUDGET-FRIENDLY

6-Day Shira Route

The leaner option for climbers who are confident in their acclimatization or short on time. Drops the Karanga Camp night, moving straight from Barranco to Barafu — workable, but with a noticeably tighter acclimatization profile than the 7-day version.

7 day Shira Route Kilimanjaro package with extra acclimatization day
7 DAYS · RECOMMENDED

7-Day Shira Route

Our most-booked Shira itinerary. The extra night at Karanga Camp gives your body real time to adjust before the summit push, lifting success rates noticeably above the 6-day version while keeping the same remote, scenic character.

Shira Route — frequently asked questions

How is the Shira Route different from the Lemosho Route?

Both approach Kilimanjaro from the west and meet at Shira 2 Camp, but Shira skips the rainforest walk-in by driving climbers up to Morum Barrier or Simba Camp at around 3,500–3,600 meters. This saves a day of hiking but means trekkers gain altitude very fast, which is why strong pre-acclimatization or extra trail days are recommended.

Is the Shira Route good for beginners?

It suits climbers with some prior high-altitude experience better than total first-timers. Because the trek starts so high, the first night carries a greater risk of altitude symptoms than on routes that climb more gradually through the forest.

How many days does the Shira Route take?

We run 6 and 7 day Shira Route packages. The 7-day version adds a buffer night for acclimatization and is the option our guides recommend to most climbers.

What is the summit success rate on the Shira Route?

Success rates broadly match Lemosho's once the extra acclimatization day is included — generally in the 85–90% range — since both routes share the same Southern Circuit approach to the summit after Shira 2 Camp.
