You’ll leave the dense rainforest behind and trek uphill across open moorland toward the Horombo Huts. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of Mawenzi and Kibo’s summit. Keep an eye out for the remarkable giant lobelias and groundsels scattered throughout the area. As you ascend, you might start to notice the impact of the rising altitude.

Your final ascent starts in the early morning hours—between midnight and 2 a.m.—as you navigate a steep trail of loose scree or snow toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, the climb continues to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, where breathtaking views await. Be sure to capture a photo at the summit to celebrate your achievement. Shortly after, you’ll begin your descent, stopping at Kibo for lunch and a short rest before heading down to Horombo Camp. Since this part of the trek begins in complete darkness, headlamps or flashlights are crucial. Expect very cold temperatures until you start descending, so wear all your warm clothing layers. This segment is the toughest of the entire climb, with numerous switchbacks. Keeping a slow, steady pace—pole pole—and staying mentally strong are essential to reaching the top.

Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate - Moshi

Time: 5-7 hours

After breakfast, we start descending through the moorland, heading towards Mandara Huts. From there, we follow a picturesque trail through dense rainforest leading to the Marangu Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. The lower trail sections may be wet and muddy, so it’s recommended to use gaiters and trekking poles. Light clothing such as shorts and T-shirts works well, but be sure to keep rain gear and warm layers nearby. At the Marangu Gate, a vehicle will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Remember to tip your guides and porters—it’s a deserved reward for their support throughout your adventure!
